1942 - Holocaust: German SS carry out selection of Jewish ghetto in Lviv, western Ukraine, arresting 5.000 "unproductive Jews". All get deported to Belzec death camp.

1987 - The worst fire in the history of the London Underground kills 31 people at Kings Cross Station in the centre of London.

1991 - Church envoy Terry Waite is freed by the Islamic extremists who kidnapped him in Beirut in 1987.

2000 - The film world celebrates the celebrity wedding of the year as film star Michael Douglas marries Welsh actress Catherine Zeta Jones.
